Frequently asked questions
I work with all genres (both fiction and nonfiction), although I specialize in fantasy, science fiction, romance, and mystery.
If you want big-picture help (for instance, feedback on plot and character), I suggest a developmental edit.
If you want scene- and paragraph-level help, (for instance, feedback on blocking and descriptions), I suggest a line edit.
If you want sentence-level help (for instance, corrections of grammar and punctuation), I suggest a copyedit.
When in doubt, I suggest going for an editorial assessment—it’s the most budget-friendly option, and can give you a good idea of where your manuscript is at.
There’s some overlap between the two, but I like to think of line edit of being at scene/chapter level, and a copy edit being at sentence/paragraph level.
For instance, if blocking in a scene is contradictory, I would point it out in both a line edit and a copyedit. But if blocking just sounds a bit awkward (but is technically correct), I would flag it in a line edit, but (usually) ignore it in a copyedit.
A line edit also looks for consistency in tone. For instance, if a character’s voice changes drastically between chapters, that’s something that would be flagged in a line edit but not necessarily in a copyedit.
If you’re not sure whether you want a line edit or a copyedit, I suggest getting a sample done of each—that will show you what kinds of errors the editor will flag.
It depends on my current project load. Generally, the delivery time for developmental edits and line edits are 4 to 6 weeks. For manuscript evaluations, delivery time is around 2 to 3 weeks. For first chapter critiques, delivery time is around 7 to 10 days.
I typically use Microsoft Word, but I am also happy to use Google Docs if you prefer.
I prefer to use PayPal, as it offers protection for both buyers and sellers. For projects, I require a deposit of half the total price before I begin the project, with the remaining half due after I deliver the final edits.
I don't use Artificial Intelligence at any stage in the editing process.
I regularly post seasonal discounts on Facebook. I also offer bundle pricing for developmental and line editing. If that’s something that interests you, let me know!
